This is the first week of this class and we started off by learning the principles of design. More simply put, it has a lot to do with your composition of your photo. Students had to go out and take pictures for each of the principles. On this blog, you will see below all the best photos I took for each category and I have listed the category next to the photo that represents it. Emphasis Repetition Simplicity Proportion Contrast Space Motion Balance Unity This assignment has taught me what the Principles of Design are. Before this week I had only known compositions, but now I can advance my photos with these design methods! The best part of this assignment was taking out a camera again and taking pictures in mind of a few of these techniques. I enjoyed it, and I hope these pictures represent what I have learned about the Principles of Design.

I am in the third trimester as a Freshman, and now I am taking Digital Photography 2! Last trimester I took the prerequesite for this class and in middle school I took two photography classes as well. I would say photography is one of my hobbies and I enjoy it, so I am taking this class to familiarize myself with new compositions and Photoshop tools. I hope my photos get to the next level in this class!
The first day I walked into this class I had a different idea about what the class would be like. I knew a little about photography, but not nearly as much as I know now. I had a lot of fun learning how to shoot in manual on my camera and I learned how to take light panting and motion blur pictures. At the beginning of the trimester I had only heard of Photoshop. I had never worked with it before and I didn't expect to in this class, but i'm glad I learned how to. I took this class to get better at photography, and I have. I really liked this class and the weekly photos due on every Monday. I explored creativity throughout the trimester when taking photos or in Photoshop. I had a lot of fun in this class improving and making progress with photography and below there is a collection of photos to show what I have learned in this class. This was one of my very first pictures taken for this class. It was for our first assignment, composition. At the beginning of the year we learned different compositions, like this one, Depth of Field. These are two examples of pictures I took this year that are too dark or too bright because I didn't know how to shoot in manual and have to change the ISO that helps lighting in good pictures. During the class, I learned how to use manual mode and adjust lighting and shutter speed as needed to create great pictures like this one! This picture is probably my favorite picture I took in this class and shows everything I learned. Eyes on the rule of thirds, nice background, no shadows on her face, subject in focus, etc. Before I learned more about Photoshop in this class, I could only adjust colors or maybe crop an image like this example. After I had a couple weeks of expirence working with Photoshop I was able to complete more complex assignments like this one. This was one of my favorite Photoshop assignments and I learned how to do it over an online tutorial.
This week the class learned how to take portraits of people and then use Photoshop to create a frame around the pictures. Part of the assignment was to take pictures and have light on each side of the face, no shadows preferably. Look below to see how it turned out! Creating the frame around the pictures was the hardest part of the assignment for me. I used Photoshop and learned a couple of tricks that will help me out during the final, because the final is creating a similar frame.
This is the seventh week of the weekly photo assignment and this time I took portrait pictures. I had my sister be my subject and used the morning sunlight in the pictures to add natural lighting and contrast. We ended up with around fifty pictures, so here is the best one including it's exposure triangle, and then following, the next best five. f 5.0 1/640 ISO 800, for editing, I adjusted the brightness/contrast a little. This is the original. From this assignment I learned what manual settings I should focus on when you are taking pictures of someone, because adapting the ISO is key from my experience. What time of day also effects the quality and mood for your photos so that is important too.
This week our photoshop assignment was to find a couple of tutorials that showed us different techniques in Photoshop and then try it out on our own photos.
This tutorial took me a long time, but it was fun, I like how the final product looks. www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/polaroids/
I learned how to use a couple of different tools in Photoshop this week including how to make copies of layer groups, how to use the Eclipse circle tool, layer effects and other tricks and key commands. It was a good assignment that was set at everyone's own pace and you could choose what you wanted to try, and I liked that.
This is the sixth week of the weekly photo assignments and this time I chose to capture macro photography. I used flowers as the subject for this assignment and it was fun taking the pictures because even though they sometimes look similar, they're different enough to make it unique. Students had to take close to fifty photos, turn in the best one, blog it with it's exposure triangle, then put the next best five under it. f 5.6 1/80 ISO 200 . No editing done. I made a copy of this picture in Photoshop and adjusted the brightness a little to make it brighter, but I liked this original better because it was darker, had more contrast, a different feeling to the picture. Taking pictures in manual for macro was hard to find the right ISO, or keep what you want in focus because you're so close to the subject, but it was fun. I changed the settings a lot and decided I like the pictures better that were a little more dim and soft.
For this assignment students had to take a picture of a room or place with no one in it first, then have someone pose and take five different pictures of them in different places of the room. In Photoshop we then used a technique to overlap the pictures showing the same person in multiple places in one room. We had to take two of these photos and blog them. I liked this assignment because it taught me how to take pictures like these and learn how to use the lasso tool. It was fun to blend the overlapped pictures to make the lighting more natural.
This is the fifth week for the photo assignment and this time I did the black and white category. We had to take plenty of pictures, blog the best picture and its' original, including the exposure triangle, then the next best five below it. f14 1/40 ISO 800 For this black and white category I learned that not all pictures look good black and white. This technique only works when it adds an element to the photo, not taking away anything.
This week students had a photoshop assignment where they had to take a picture in the school and use Photoshop to change the context and make it unrealistic. Creativity was a big part of the assignment, but also the students' skills in Photoshop because there were no step-by-step instructions. Students had to create an image and figure out how to change it on there own, but had to include multiple layers, a theme and at least one shadow. I chose to do a red carpet stairway with paparazzi and stars walking on it. This assignment made me more familiar with the photoshop tools. I liked having the freedom of being able to create whatever scene I wanted. This assignment was hard though because there were no instructions to look at to help us edit the picture. Overall, it was fun, and I learned a lot about Photoshop.
